It shares its northwestern border with the city of Detroit and is about 8 miles (12.9 km) northeast of Downtown Detroit along East Jefferson Avenue. It is one of five affluent communities within the Grosse Pointe collection of cities, which also includes Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Pointe Park, Grosse Pointe Shores, and Grosse Pointe Woods.
Grosse Pointe was incorporated as a village in 1880, but at that time also included what is now Grosse Pointe Farms. The community was divided along its present lines in 1893 over issues of allowing the sale of alcohol. It was incorporated as a city in 1934.
